Since I had a stroke back in May I’ve had a lot of time to think, one thing that has been on my mind quite a lot is the state of this country and why it’s such a mess. Having been spending a lot of time walking as part of my rehabilitation and generally getting my strength and fitness back to normal I’ve seen plenty of things that I normally do not see when I’m driving around in my Jaguar. While out walking today I had to cross at a round about, as I was crossing a car was suddenly bearing down on me having exited the roundabout without signalling. Why? Well probably because he couldn’t be arsed like so many other people doing so many other things. The more I think about it the more I see people doing things nearly good enough, and nearly right, nearly 100%. I see shit nearly everyday, piss on toilet seats because people are too lazy to lift the seat, toilets that aren’t flushed, people not washing their hands, people talking on phones while driving, people crossing over the white line while going round corners, even on blind corners with double white lines, cars poorly maintained with bulbs out, people without seatbelts, red elastic bands laying on pavements and in gutters, discarded by the postman, dog shit everywhere, plastic bags with dog shit in them left hanging on gates and fences, cars parked looking like they were abandoned, crap dumped behind bottle banks and recycling bins, recycling left strewn in the street by the people collecting it. I could go on all day, and at some point probably will. My point is, no one wants to be the abso-fucking-lutly best at what they do, hell, they can’t even be bothered to be as good as the guy next to them. What happened to doing your best to be the best and doing everything to the best of your abilities? What happened that people just don’t give a shit? That just ok is good enough? The only place a lot of people seem to compete these days are doing as little as possible as often as possible, being indignant and being slovenly.
Now we know what the problem is, what can be done about it?
Well, lifting the toilet seat before taking a piss would be a great place to start, just making a bit more effort doing very simple things is a great place to start, once people take a little more pride in what they do and how they do it would improve everything, and if everyone improved everything you never know, we might even become great Great Britain again.
